April 4, 2007—Strategic Data Systems today announced the ViewPoint indoor location tracking system. ViewPoint is an innovative use of RFID technology for real-time, continuous indoor tracking of personnel and assets. ViewPoint enables government, emergency personnel, industry, and the public to rapidly locate people or resources indoors to improve safety or efficiency.

“Up to now, there has been no cost-effective way to precisely and reliably locate and track personnel within buildings,” states Jim Christopher, President and CEO of Strategic Data Systems. “Affordable location tracking systems, such as GPS, lack precision and are unreliable both indoors and when electrical or communications systems are compromised. On the other hand, sophisticated location tracking systems are available but at a significant cost. ViewPoint bridges the gap.” The ViewPoint system uniquely combines affordability, precise location and tracking, and self reliance.

ViewPoint’s affordability is based on its creative use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. While retail businesses place low-cost RFID tags on products to transmit data as products pass by fixed RFID readers, the ViewPoint system uses this technology in reverse. ViewPoint employs a plurality of passive RFID tags attached to walls within buildings while personnel wear lightweight readers or “interrogator relay units” (IRUs). “By using low-cost RFID tags in buildings, ViewPoint is significantly less expensive than competing systems that employ a network of RFID readers in buildings,” states Christopher. In addition, ViewPoint’s location precision can be as granular as needed.

As a person or asset passes by a building’s RFID tag, his IRU receives location information and transmits the data in real time to a base computer. The base computer records, tracks, and displays position information of all IRUs in operation in the building. ViewPoint can also track and display the location of exits and hazardous materials so that personnel inside are aware of critical safety issues.

A critical differentiator of ViewPoint is the system’s self reliance. When 80% of public communications systems went down during Hurricane Katrina, the need for self-reliant emergency systems was clear. Unlike competing systems, Viewpoint’s operation and power needs and its integral wireless network are independent of electrical or communications infrastructure.

Another unique capability of ViewPoint is its seamless connectivity with popular mapping services including Google Earth, Microsoft Virtual Earth, and ESRI ArcGIS Explorer. A user can drill down from space to the interior of a building to visualize RFID-equipped personnel and assets. With this feature, regional operations and intelligence centers can streamline resource utilization and coordinate mutual assistance.

Although initially customized for first responders, ViewPoint has universal application for businesses that need to track personnel or assets. “ViewPoint has the potential to become a powerful, low-cost utility for a broad spectrum of industries including hospitals, factories, mines, and the criminal justice system,” states Christopher.
